The Buffalo Gap Prairie is located in southwest South Dakota, and includes over 591,000 acres of prairie along with badlands. The prairie extends from Kadoka, South Dakota on the east to the Cheyenne River on the west, north to US Highway 14 and south to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. A corner of Badlands National Park touches Buffalo Gap. Wind Cave National Park and Black Hills National Forest are nearby.
At first glance the space looks vast and empty. However, by looking more closely you can gain an appreciation for the rich diversity of life that has adapted to this unusual and harsh environment.
Buffalo Gap Prairie includes tall grass prairie, mixed grass prairie, short grass prairie, woody draws, juniper breaks, wetlands, rivers and ponds, and badlands formations.
