Pokagon State Park is located near Angola off I-69 which exits off I-90. The park borders on Lake James and Snow Lake and offers boating, swimming and fishing. There are excellent changing facilties for those wishing to hike, bike or kayak. The park gets its name from two notable leaders of the Potawatomi Indians, Leopold and Simon Pokagon (father and son).
Getting to the boat ramp at Lake James proved to be difficult as it is not clearly marked. Only after asking a park ranger for assistance was I directed to the "Authorized Vehicles Only Beyond This Point" sign which marked the only road leading to the boat ramp. The park ranger assured me that he gave me permission to drive down this road.
I put in near the boat dock and kayaked this very tranquil lake. After kayaking on Lake James I enjoyed a scenic bike ride on the paved bike trail through the Potawatomi Nature Preserve.
