Pierce Lake, Rock Cut State Park — Loves Park, Illinois

Rock Cut State Park in Winnebego County is located in the northern region of Illinois. Nearby is the Rock River and the city of Rockford.

The park contains two lakes in its 3,092 acres. Pierce Lake, with 162 acres, is named for the Illinois State Representative William Pierce of Rockford, Illinois. Representative Pierce served in the legislature from 1951-1966. The smaller 50-acre lake, Olson Lake is especially nice for swimmers. The park offers camping, hiking, horseback trails and cross-country skiing.

I kayaked here on a very crowded Sunday but I was still able to find large stretches of water all to myself. There were paddleboats, small fishing boats and canoes. The parking lot is located next to the boat ramp and dock and there are changing facilities near the parking lot. There is also a concession stand for food and drinks.
