Marblehead Lighthouse

Marblehead Lighthouse is one of Lake Erie's best known and most-photographed landmarks. The grounds surrounding the lighthouse offer excellent views of Lake Erie, Sandusky Bay, Kelley's Island and South Bass Island.

The oldest lighthouse in continuous operation on the Great Lakes, has guided sailors safely along the rocky shores of Marblehead Peninsula since 1822. In 1819, the fifteenth U. S. Congress recognized the need for navigational aides along the Great Lakes, and set aside $5,000 for construction of a light tower at the entrance to Sandusky Bay. Contractor William Kelly built the 50-foot tower of native limestone on the tip of the Marblehead Peninsula. The base of the tower is 25 feet in diameter, with walls five feet thick. It narrows to twelve feet at the top with two-foot thick walls.

Ohio River with Bridge near Pomeroy, Ohio

I kayaked on the Ohio River in July around sunset. It was a very hot and humid day and the water was perfectly calm. It made for a wonderful kayaking experience. This photo was taken on the boat ramp in Middleport, Ohio. Looking north from Middleport one can see the bridge near Pomeroy which crosses over to Mason, West Virginia.

Ohio River at Dusk

This is the launch site at Middleport, Ohio. I put in around 7 p.m. on a hot and muggy July evening. The water was very still so I had a great kayak on some very smooth water.

Stockbridge Bowl (Lake Mahkeenac), Berkshires near Lenox, Massachusetts

My first kayaking experience took place in the Stockbridge Bowel near Stockbridge and Lenox, Massachusetts in early May 2003. A quiet lake, it was a very gentle introduction to a wonderful activity which soon took over a large place in my life!

Kayaking at Stockbridge Bowl (Lake Mahkeenac), near Stockbridge, Massachusetts

I went back to kayak at Stockbridge Bowl in October, 2003. The Berkshire Mountains can be seen from the lake.

Prospect Lake, North Egremont, Massachusetts from kayak

Located near the southern Berkshire township of North Egremont, Prospect Lake offer lakeside camping and kayaking. I kayaked here in early October, parked right next to the water and put in on a small sandy beach. Some Canadian geese and I had the entire lake to ourselves.
