Red Square
In old Slavonic, the ancient language still used in the Russian Orthodox Church, the word krasnaya means both red and beautiful. Red Square is bounded at the north end by the Historical Museum, on the northeast side by the GUM department store, on the south end by St. Basil's Cathedral, and on the southwestern side by the Lenin Mausoleum.
Red Square/St. Basils
St. Basil's Cathedral is one of the most astonishing architectural sights in the world. Tsar Ivan the Terrible had the cathedral built and legend has it that he had his architect's eyes gauged out after its completion so that they might never build such an edifice again.
