| Island landing approach
Preparing to land on one of the more than 13,500 islands of Lake of the Woods.
| Island
Sandy beaches were few and far between on the islands of Lake of the Woods. Landing on an island required a great deal of exploration to find an adequate landing area. Once landed you always had to be on the alert for bears, evidence of whom was everywhere on shore.

The grassy area in front of this island hides the rather rocky shoreline. Landing was possible on sloping areas of the Canadian Shield which tended to gently rise out of the water towards the shore.

Miles and miles of unspoiled wilderness made kayaking a joy on Lake of the Woods. You could explore shorelines, inlets and bays for hours without seeing another boat.
| Water lilies from kayak
Lake of the Woods had many marsh areas containing water lilies.
