Originally built to impress visitors to the Universal Exhibition of 1889, the Eiffel Tower was supposed to be a temporary addition to the Paris skyline. It was designed by Gustave Eiffel (1832-1923) and was the world's tallest building until 1931 when the Empire State Building was completed in New York City. |
