General Winfield Scott (1786-1866) Union General from Virginia. A hero of the War with Mexico and the War of 1812, he became General in Chief of the Army in 1841 and remained in that position when the Civil War began.
Union General from New York. First in his class at Harvard, he studied law and was a member of the New York Tribune's editorial staff. A monument was erected to him at Gettysburg. |
