How to Create Interesting Edges

  1. Launch Adobe Photoshop.

  2. Open the photograph you wish to add an edge to. In this example we will use the Bronx Botanical Garden photograph found on our class CD-ROM. (Or you can save the JPEG below.)

  3. Under the Image menu select Canvas Size and enlarge the canvas size by increasing the pixel width and height. You can leave the image centered in the middle of the canvas. Click OK.

  4. You might want to duplicate this file so you can experiment with different edges. Use the Duplicate command under the Image menu.

  5. Next use the Marquee/Selection tool to make a rectangular selection slightly inside the photograph. Then choose Select -> Inverse. Our filter will only work on this selected region of white background and outer edge of the photograph.

  6. Now choose Filter -> Blur -> Motion Blur with the following settings: Angle 45 and Distance 10.

  7. This creates the following effect:

  8. Try some of these variations:
    Filter -> Pixelate -> Crystallize Cell Size 5

    Filter -> Gaussian Blur 5 pixels

    Filter -> Distort -> Pinch 40%
