Logomotion Review Notes

Turning a Printed Logo into a Logomotion 3-D Animation

  1. Scan original logo and save as a 72-dpi PICT file.

  2. Open Adobe Illustrator. Open logo PICT file. The following dialog box will appear. Click "Illustrator Template (PICT)". This will open the PICT file as a template only (it will be grayed out).

  3. Select the Autotrace tool in Illustrator and click on each letter of the logo to autotrace it.

    The Autotrace Tool

  4. Save file as an EPS file.

  5. Import this EPS file into Logomotion. EPS, which stands for Encapsulated PostScript, is a file format used for representing 2-D drawings. The EPS file you import into Logomotion will appear in the window as a 3-D extrusion.

  6. Resize the logo using the Uniform Scale tool in the Toolbox.

  7. Set up a camera. Open the Top View window by choosing it from the Windows menu. Using the V-Plane tool in the Top View, drag the Camera to the right and in front of the Text object. Use the Point At command in the Options menu and select Extruded Object from that sub-menu.

  8. Choose Sequencer from the Windows menu. Choose Snapshot from the Animate menu. Notice that the Time Marker has moved forward a half second in time. Again, in the Top View window, drag the Camera across to the left of your logo. Continue setting these camera positions until you are happy with the motion.

  9. Render your movie. Choose Render Movie under the File pull-down menu. Set the Shade to Shade Best. Go have coffee. View your finished movie using MoviePlayer.

Morphing Type Using Logomotion

  1. Use the Text tool from the Tool palette to type in a word. In this exercise we are using the word "One".

  2. Move the Sequencer Time Marker forward one second in time.

  3. Using the Select Tool (the top tool in the Tool palette), double-click on the text in the Camera window.

  4. This opens the Text dialog box. Type in the word "Two". Click OK.

  5. Select the Camera View and choose Detailed Preview from the Animate menu.

  6. Render your movie. Choose Render Movie under the File pull-down menu. Set the Shade to Shade Best, 24-bit, anti-aliasing on. Go have coffee. View your finished movie using MoviePlayer.

Creating a Flying Logo Using Logomotion

  1. Place a Text object in your scene. Select the tool that looks like the letter "T". Double click on it. The Text dialog will open. Type your name and choose a font (Don't worry about the font size). Click the OK button. Your type will appear in the Camera window.

  2. Put the Control Panel (on the left hand side) into Rendering Mode. Switch Shading Mode from Wire to Best, 24-bit, with anti-aliasing.

  3. Apply a surface to your Text object. Put the Control Panel into Surfaces Mode. Drag and drop the name of the surface from the scrolling list in the upper right-hand corner into the Camera window. When the Camera View is done re-drawing, you should see the surface applied to your name.

  4. Add a Backdrop (background scene). Select Backdrop on the StageHands Control Panel. Drag and drop a backdrop onto your scene.

  5. Add an animated camera to give your scene a sense of action. Click the Cameras button on the StageHands Control Panel. Select a camera from the scrolling list. Drag and drop the camera animation of your choice into the Camera window.

  6. Render your movie. Choose Render Movie under the File pull-down menu. Set the Shade to Shade Best. Go have coffee. View your finished movie using MoviePlayer.
